Kava, a mild narcotic, is traditionally used on Pohnpei for many purposes. The root of kava is cleaned, pounded with a rock on a smooth large flat rock surface, water is added, the pulverized kava root kneaded and finally the liquid is squeezed into a cup from the shell of a coconut.
