Climate change and degradation by pollution AND the need to recycle: Pohnpei, the Federated States of Micronesia

As an island community, changes from climate impacts and the effect of pollution are readily observed. The following images depict what I have observed. Plastic abounds in the mangroves both from litter and deliberate dump sites.

There are many pigpens situated on the water. This has the potential for spreading disease such as Leptospirosis, which can be deadly. The main carrier of Leptospirosis on the island of Pohnpei are pigs, dogs and rats.

Everyone and every country leaves a carbon footprint. I have heard from some here that their problems with a rising sea level and possible changes in weather patterns, are the result of other nations such as the United States and China. Cars here on Pohnpei routinely put out clouds of exhaust, and much of the food is imported by ships. Everyone contributes and everyone is responsible to do all that they can towards correcting the assault currently occurring against the earth.

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples should be key in addressing climate justice. Indigenous peoples are knowledgeable experts on the climate frontlines who live in a closely defined relationship with nature therefore disruption of the inherent homeostasis in their life ways is critical. We must listen to these teachers/stewards of the environment, which sustains all life. Integrity of the environment and the health, safety and welfare of the human community shall at all times be placed above any sectoral or private interests. Indigenous peoples have the right to the conservation and protection of their environment and the productive capacity of their lands, territories and resources. Sustainable/equitable development meets the needs of the present without compromising future generations’ ability to meet their own needs.

In response to the below request. There are many lead acid batteries that are discarded and can and do end up in free running water. The lead can negatively effect health, especially of the young when so much growth to their body is occurring. The trash seen in the mangroves has many consequences. The pig pens on fresh water streams, can have deadly consequences due to the bacteria their feces harbor.

I am worried and sorry for the future generations of Pohnpei. What are our leaders doing now for not giving the island clean and safe? Please all of us are responsible for our home island and only us can safe our future not the Americans, Chinese, Japanese, or other developed countries.
