Blast Effects on Townsley's Doors, 1943

In 1943 the U.S. Army carried out a series of tests at Battery Townsely to study the blast effects of firing 16-inch guns on wooden doors being considered for other casemate batteries. To make this study, several of the steel doors near gun casemate #2 were removed and replaced with wooden ones. The following photos show those wooden doors while in place. The photos also include tantalizing glimpses of the insides of the store rooms and magazines where they were installed.

The original report is available on-line at http://community-2.webtv.net/mjdwyer/blast/
