The commuter traffic around Stockholm is carried out by a varied stock, all quite aged and run down. The core has been traditionally handled by the class X1 EMUs from 1967-75. After some years of experimenting with different combinations to handle a general state of deficiency and peak time traffic, the class X10 entered service in 1982-1993. However, this has to some extent been insufficient and the X1s are getting old. Some additional experimenting has been carried out and a for short period, Danish class Bn coaches were hired. Recently, some obsolete German DB class 420 have been put into service as a temporary solution until the new class X60 EMUs arrive. This will hopefully establish a more permanent solution to a condition which has been more or less temporary since the beginning of the 1960s...
