The period 1980 to 1985 involved a major unification of the Swedish rolling stock, as several older types were taken out of service. At this time the rail network and all operations (with some insignificant exceptions) were carried out by the state owned monopoly - Swedish State Railways (SJ). Since then, the rail network infrastructure has been split out from SJ, and SJ itself has further been split in pieces. Several other private operators now use the rail network.
