Sinking logs was a major problem and was one reason to get away from flotation. Given the density of the rings of this guy, it seems pretty young and fast-growing. Such logs were typically more susceptible to sinking given their higher ability to take up water.

Amazing anyway - it has been here for some forty years and has not yet fell apart.
