Here, I think that the limited resolution of the EF28-300L takes its toll. However, I think this is what large pixel count is all about - cropping ! More pixels allows you to take out sections without loss of detail (at least with an 1Ds).

According to my personal taste, from this out-of-camera crop I would crank up the contast just slightly and add a little bit of sharpening
