It's shot in darkness and the flash is used to illuminate the object. As the flash pulse is very short, high-speed events like this one can be frozen. The setup is described athttp://www.pbase.com/jakobe/destruction_setup

I love this image, however, I find it hard to believe that it's a 1 second exposure!! How can that be!?
