The future of the network was still uncertain in the early 1980s and only very basic maintenance was performed on the permanent way to keep the traffic going.

I recall very well the poor track condition here at my "home station" and finally something had to be done. It appears to be just an austerity move though, with only a few sections of rail being replaced.
