Håksberg is the northern center of a more or less continuous iron ore field stretching from Ställdalen in the south to Tuna Hästberg in the north. More precisely, the Håksberg field in reality comprised the adjacent mines at Iviken, Ickorrbotten and Källbotten as well. The mining history in this area was initiated in the 16th century and the entire field is formally littered with old and modern remains of mining.
Håksberg and its adjacent fields were acquired by a German consortium in 1937 (probably with som knowledge about future needs for steel...). After some idling after WWII, the mines were overtaken by a Swedish state owned consortium.
Despite a very large known ore area and a decent annual output of some 500 ktons yearly, the mine was closed in 1978/79 and all operations ceased. The entire system is today water filled.
