Dannemora iron mine was in operation from 1481 to 1992. The ore- and the steel produced in numerous mills nearby earned worldwide reputation for its purity and outstanding quality over hundreds of years.
Like several other mines, Dannemora was upgraded as a result of the post WWII rush for iron ore. The buildings from late 1940 to end of 1950 are usually ugly concrete shapes with no aesthetical merits whatsoever.
At its closure in 1992, the yearly production was around 650.000 tons per year. Due to the current high demand for iron ore, there have been discussions of reopening the mine again.
