Usually I am not very afraid of sudden structural failures when walking around in abandoned places, but this Italian castello is in a really bad shape. Like always, when roofs starts to leak seriously, the decay progresses rapidly. Coming from Sweden where timber is widely available, it strikes me that it of course is different here. Where a typical floor support beam in a Swedish 1900th century building can easily exceed 12-15 inches, even large rooms in this castle had beams that were more in the 4-5 inch range. Not surprisingly given the level of decay, some floors were really scary indeed and more of the castle would have been explored if this sense of squeaking and swinging was not there.
There is certainly something magical with castles and when they are abandoned, the mysticism gets even deeper and one would almost expect to step into a ghost somewhere in the shadows. Apart from this omnipresent worry of falling through a floor, wandering around in these silent premises was really fantastic. The standard guesswork of when the place sunk is not that easy, but some scattered evidence suggests that a number of pretty ordinal families lived here some 20-25 years ago. Another guess based on some details is that some attempts were made some ten years ago or so to shape things up. However, it does not take a building engineer to understand that this former beauty is beyond all hope...
