The abandoned plywood factory

This plywood factory was built in the 1930s and was probably very modern by that time. Large halls, carried up by elegant beams and wooden arches together with the wall paintings in the canteen, typical for the era, it all gives a strong sense of self-confidence about the future. The factory was extended during several periods of the 1950s and the 1970s, but falling demand due to introduction of new materials, strong competition from imports, increasing energy costs and increasing wages turned the figures red in the mid 1970s. The coming period was turbulent and the factory changed hands, but without serious investments, nothing could stop the downward slope, which steadily continued towards the inevitable end in 1990 where it all went bankrupt.

Walking around in these empty premises gives a somewhat surrealistic feeling where the chaos and intense feeling of destruction is almost paralyzing. Empty shells can be found as remains from the army training that has taken place here since the factory closed. The buildings are all in terrible shape and some parts have collapsed, one by water leakage and another by fire.

After years of debacle about its future, the local county has now finally allocated money to pay for the entire site to be bulldozed during 2007.

UPDATE: I passed by in early August 2007 and expected a Dresden-in-1945 like experience, but that wasn't the case. Maybe the cash wasn't there when it was time. However - a beautiful summer evening with lovely weather, which is something I've not experienced there before.

UPDATE: The factory is now history and was finally demolished in late 2007. The site is today meticulously cleaned up with almost no evidence from past times.
