The abandoned limestone plant

Limestone processing was once a local business, where plants were typically built adjacent to the limestone pit itself. In a time when the consumers were local and the market was regulated, this worked fine.

As a majority of the cost of the final product is energy for the furnaces, steeply increasing energy prices made it difficult to maintain profitability. Given the similarity with cement production, the market is today global and production has moved to costal location. Inland plants, like this one were simply doomed.
