not goofy at all, i like it too. :) while the photo is a bit blurry, it looks fine at medium size.
it's a nice minimalist type of shot. what attracts me to the shot is again the perspective. you notice the photo is taken close to the ground. adults don't see the world like this anymore, so shots taken from a child's perspective will always have something special and appealing about it.
other nice qualities about this photo is the line that cuts diagnoally across the photo in the pavement, and also it looks like the shoes were placed by rule of thirds even! wow... do your students know about things like rule of thirds?! i'm impressed indeed.
