Staircase, with arch and half-arches, remained intact from the crusader period

This staircase was built for horses going up along shallow steps to the stable which was above the refectory and was part of the large fortress of the Hospitalers or Knights of St John. Most of the fortress was destroyed by the Mamelukes in 1291, and a few walls that remained came down during the siege of Napoleon in 1799.
