Sgt. McCrimmon killed Maj. Gen. Phil Kearny in the Civil War. It is said Gen. Lee promoted McCrimmon and gave him a furlough and thought so much of Kearny, his enemy, that he purchased his horse and saddle with his own money and sent them to his widow. John McCrimmon, at one time a Sheriff of Telfair County, returned from the Civil War and fulfilled his duties as a citizen. His wife, Christiana Clements McCrimmon is buried beside him in an unmarked grave.
