General A.P. Hill, Confederate Military Leader

Gen. A.P. Hill (Little Powell) was the commander of Confederate forces which included the Georgia 49th. He was killed on the same day, April 2, 1865, and same place, at Petersburg, that Capt. Lucius Williams was taken prisoner.

I CAN RELATE TO THIS IMAGE OF GEN. HILL AS HE WAS LIKELY THE COMMANDER OF MY GGGGRANDFATHER WILLIAM "WILLIE" VICKERS. VICKERS WAS IN THE 61ST GA REG. FROM COFFEE CO. HE LEFT COFFEE CO WITH OVER 1000 MEN AND WHEN HE CLIMBED OUT OF THE DITCHES OF PETERSBURG THERE WERE ONLY 81. BUT PRODELY HE STOOD WITH WITH THE ONLY 49 ARMED MEN OF HIS REGIMENT IN LINE AT APPOMATTOX AND LEE'S SURRENDER ON APRIL 9, 1865. THEN HE WALKED HOME.
