The Political Gathering In Jacksonville in 1834 Reflected Intense Feelings

It was the Union men against the Nullifiers. And the Unionists ruled the day and toasted the men who stood for those beliefs. But the time would come when the Southern thoughts would go toward those of the South Carolinian, John C. Calhoun, and away from the sentiments of Andrew Jackson. And when that happened we had the Civil War.

My mistake, the years Peter and Susannah Coffee settled in the Caldwell Settlement was in 1747 (not 1847) in that portion of Amelia County that became Prince Edward County Virginia in 1754. The present community of Phenix Virginia is located in Charlotte County and is near the Charlotte-Prince Edward County line. Royal Governor Gooch granted the land in that area of the Virginia Colony to Scots-Irish Presbyterian disenters knowing that they would be the first killed if a Indian uprising should occur.

These Scots-Irish families became the first in America to be called "back-woodsmen". After the Caldwell Settlement was established, the Great Wagon Road was cleared for 735 miles in the backwoods of Virginia and North Carolina along the eastern slope of the Allegneny Mountains. The Great Wagon Road was built from the seaport at Dumphries on the Quantico Creek inlet of the Potomac River and from the ports at Baltimore and Philadelphia.

In 1847, Peter and Susannah (Mathews) Coffee settled on 400 acres along Vaughn's Creek and Cub Creek in the portion of the 30,000 acre Caldwell Settlement. The tobacco plantaion was located in the vacinity of the present community of Phenix. The western portion of Amelia County became Prince Edward County in 1854. Peter and Susannah were the grandparents of General John R. Coffee and General John E. Coffee. The Caldwell Settlement was established by John Caldwell in 1847 with Scots-Irish Presbyterian disenters (non-Anglican). John Caldwell was the grandfather of John Caldwell Calhoun, the great statesman for the Carolinas and the grandfather of the Confederate States of America.
