We Visited The Cenotaph Place Of Three Generals

This is not a very good picture because of the shade. But boy, were we ever glad to see that shade! It was hot as blazes on Tues., Aug. 6, 2002! If you look closely you will see the cenotaph monuments (3 of them) for the 3 Generals: Gen. John Clark, Gen. John E. Coffee, and Gen. Mark Willcox. The military leaders were closely connected to Jacksonville, Ga. Gen. Clark (later Governor Clark) lived on a plantation next to old Fort Clark (now Blockhouse Church); he gave the land for a "babtist" church there in 1818 and it is the exact location of the present-day Blockhouse Baptist Church. Gen. Coffee lived about 3 and a half miles east of Jacksonville and constructed the Coffee Road from Jacksonville, Ga., to Tallahassee, Fl. with Thomas Swain. Gen. Coffee was the only dead man ever elected to Congress. Gen. Mark Willcox, Coffee's son-in-law, was an Indian fighter, legislator, and co-founder of the Georgia Supreme Court.
