Winship - McArthur House Near Lumber City

This house was built by Walter McArthur in 1877 after his return from the Civil War. The older McArthur House, built around 1805, is behind it and is still in good shape also. Some of the McArthur boys did not make it back. The family cemetery across the road from the house honors those there and those buried on Civil War battlefields/cemeteries. John and Bette Davis, descendants, live in the big house now and were gracious hosts for those attending the marker dedications for the McArthur soldiers on October 20, 2001.

For almost 10 years I have helped inside this house, with parties and such. It is the warmest and most loving place you could ever visit. The owners, ohmygoodness, I could never say enough bout Mr and Mrs Davis. Such gracious, and wonderful, welcoming friends!!

Very interested to know who the current owner of The Winship Farm is. This is a beautiful home with a history I have always been fascinated with. Thank you for your time.

My grandfather ran the farm for the Jordans and lived in the house behind it. This was my mothers side. Then my fathers parents lived there when I was young. So I have a good bit of my past was spent there. Heard a lot of tells of it being haunted. Kathy the building you refer to, I was told was the old store for the people that worked the farm. There is an old road that runs in front of it. If you go back towards the farm on it there are old shacks all the way through until it meets the road that the farm is on. These where the homes of the farm hands.
My grandparents where caretakers until sometime in the 70s. My sister did a report for school on the big house with video of outside and inside. She may still have it. My first memories of the house, it was completely furnished with antiques. It was awesome.

That is my grandparents' house. The other building used to be a commissary/post office at the time. The house was built by Walter T. McArthur from 1870-1877. It was sold to Dylan Winship in 1917. Charles McArthur Jordan (my great-great grandfather) bought the house back in 1934.

What a "Beautiful Monster" Can you imagine what it must cost to keep it up? I would love to see the inside.

This area of Wheeler county is of special interest to me. There is also a large, old building on the south side of the pecan orchard which you used to be able to see from hwy 19. I must admit my curiousity got the better of me and i went back thru the field and got a closer look. Does anyone have any history on it. Looking around it, it occured to me that it may have been a boarding house or home????? It looks very well put together for it's obvious age. Some of the millwork has held together very well.

I have enjoyed all the pictures but I'm interested in the Winship-McArthur house-----where does the name Winship fit in---I saw no Winship's in any of the pictures. Thank you for any information.
