After retiring from his career in optometry in the late 70's Dr. Jack Smith and his wife Mary then made a number of trips to rural Mexico and the Philippines to provide eye care, in some cases to people that had never received it. He spoke of how gratifying it felt to see the look on someone's face when they could see clearly, occasionally for the first time in their lives. One can only wonder. He used to collect donated used eyeglasses at his church in St. Helens Oregon, determine the prescription, and then match them to the individual needs of those who came to see him on these trips he and Mary took together. Me? I was taking care of the house and the dog, glad I wasn't along wondering where to find some American food. He was my mentor and friend. Mary made me homemade soup and bread for years and she and I still have lunch once a month or so, except now I provide the meal. I always bring too much.
