Big Brother James - 05/02/06

Tallahassee / Quincy, Florida

This is my older brother Jim, and the photo was taken last September when I was visiting up north in Maryland. Jim has been diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia, and though he was somewhat lucid then and could talk and hold a conversation, he has regressed to the point now that he can’t even say “Yes” or “No”. He has regressed to a child like mind, … not even aware really that he is in the world.

He was the most brilliant man I’ve ever known, and made his living as a top Computer Programmer and Data Analyst for the military working at a secret military base somewhere deep in the back woods of Maryland just nine months ago. He was fascinated by all things of science, and as late as the year before in a phone conversation he told me that he was going back to school to study to become a Micro Biologist and Geneticist.
Today I found out that last week he was committed to an assisted living facility. He no longer has the functional skills to take care of himself.
It breaks my heart.

Grandma went the same way. She may not have been in the same league as James but from my childhood, I can just remember her as bright and fun. On a country walk, one day, she dove into a hedgerow and came out with a tiny little blue flower - gave us it’s name, Latin name and local ‘nickname’ and it’s ‘country medicine’ use. Her knowledge of country lore was encyclopaedic.
Seems, sometimes, that these things happen to the best of us. With sympathy, Ian.

Man... I am sorry to read this.
There is not much I can think to say,
other than I saw this post and was touched by it.

Gosh, life takes some twists and turns doesn't it.
My dad is in the same boat but he's of course a
much older guy...

I am so sorry for you both. I hope that somehow someway your brother can be cured. Just hold on to the memories and have faith that a miracle can happen. I am so sorry and I feel for you. Hang in there John ....
