"B" is for "Bullet"

Tallahassee / Quincy, Florida

I’ve been trying for some time to get an image of the muzzle flash made by a bullet being fired. Tonight, with the help of my friend Erik who fired the weapon while I worked the camera, I’ve finally had a success. This is my Hungarian SA 85 “machine gun” shown in my January PAD, … a 7.62 X 39 caliber bullet fired at dusk and captured by the camera with no Photoshop post-processing except for cropping and sharpening of the photo. The camera was on a tripod and I used a cable release to keep the shutter open before, during and after the firing. Pretty cool huh?
Muzzle flash – a cool thing for guys.

Yes indeed Ian, it’s a muzzle flash. The short barrel on this particular weapon makes a big exclamation point of light when it’s fired. I have to admit I have wanted to fire tracer rounds, but so far have never had the opportunity. Perhaps someday.

This is muzzle flash? I thought at first it was smoke from the propellant illuminated by torchlight but if it’s from the muzzle flash then well done indeed. Either way it’s a damn good capture.
Oh, and yes, muzzle flash is pretty cool - I rather like tracer too.

This looks like the kind of shot (no pun intended) that you could have a lot of fun playing with camera settings. I wonder what it would look like with 1s, iso 1200.
