When I was a child, my Mom and Dad insisted that my brothers and sister and I learned how to be completely independent of others. One of my earliest memories as a child was standing on a stool at an old kerosene stove in Madrid Spain frying an egg in a huge cast iron skillet for my breakfast. I was maybe four years old at the time. Maybe. As a teenager I really didn’t understand why my friends were totally helpless in the kitchen for by that time I could prepare entire meals without even thinking about it. My Dad taught me “A real man knows how to cook and take care of himself” and I never thought another thing about it. This morning I asked Gerie what she would like to have for Valentine’s Day since it’s coming up, and she hugged my neck and said “Every day is Valentine’s Day for me John, for when I come home from work you always have a wonderful meal ready to serve.” Tonight’s meal will be Lasagna made from scratch, with over nine different cheeses, 11 different herbs and spices, tomato, onion, green pepper, wine, … a total of over 30 different ingredients.
A man prepares food like he makes love to a woman, … with passion.
