We named the mountain after Edward and Ebenezer Jessup, who acquired the land around 1770 under a Crown grant. Edward and Ebenezer married sisters (who happened to be their first cousins) and had a "style of living which bespoke opulence, taste, culture, and familiarity with the elegance and customs of the best provincial society" until after the start of the Revolutionary war. Because Edward and Ebenezer were Loyalists and the British lost the war, they lost their land and were forever banished from New York. If they returned would be declared guilty of felony under penalty of death without clergy. Pretty unambiguous; New York didn’t like the Jessups anymore. Some Loyalists got portions of their land back but the Jessups didn't.
