Gjirokastra, with its steep cobbled streets and traditional buildings, is a charming Albanian town.

Walking around in the historical centre of this sleepy town makes visitors feel like stapping back in history.

In the 20th century, Gjirokastra produced two particularly well-known sons; Enver Hoxha the communist dictator and Ismail Kadare, the well known writer.

Gjirokastra is, sinds July 2005, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
