The "Shekere" is a basic shaker which has a net of little shells placed over the resonating gourd. Like the cymbal fork on the left side, a geographical origin for the model on the photo is unknown, but the instrument is known under many names like "cabasa" or "afuxe" in Latin America and Africa (namely Ghana and Nigeria).

The bronze bells called "si" are used together with the wooden clapper "wa" (next picture) to indicate the main rhythmical pulse in the traditional "saung" harp and chamber music in Myanmar.

This is a small percussion instrument of the Hmong in Vietnam, which is about 5 cm in diameter and used for shaking on the finger. It reminds me of the common brass rings which were tossed over the dancers feet thousands of years ago all over Southeast Asia.

This is a typical percussion instrument called "qarqba" which gets used like castagnets in pairs during the performance of the "Gnaoua" tradition which became famous through the festival in Essaouira, Marocco. The main ostinato of the castagnets gets underlined by the bass line of the "Gimbri" bass lute.

This model shows the authentic appearance of the bells. Each bell had the possibility of two tunes, depending on which side you hit the bell with the hammer. The bell sets a re hughe, the biggest bells reach a size of over two meter, a complete set can be up to 6 meters long, and the upper set of bells were hung up that high that a player had to climb a ladder to beat them.

The first row of bells (upper stage) mainly consisted of five bells, representing the pentatonic scale, the lower set with seven bells the (quite like) diatonic system. The figures on this model show a group of musicians with old instruments like the Sheng and the Pipa.

Die obere Reihe repräsentiert die pentatonische Grundskala mit 5 Glocken, die untere die diatonische Skala mit 7 Glocken. Leider sind die Glocken an diesem Modell falsch herum aufgehängt (links und rechts vertauscht). Die Figuren auf diesem Modell zeigen Figuren, die andere Instrumente wie die Pipa und die Sheng spielen.

This little hand bell is an important signal instrument for tempel rituals as well as each household, no matter if calling the kids to dinner or just hung in the attic to prevent bad ghosts from entering the house. Many of these bells are believed to resound the voice of a holy spirit, so some are just kept in private as a symbol of luck and health.
