This small model is just for "show and tell" purposes and does not match the real size of Anklung sets at all. Normally, The deepest tone sets of an Angklung reaches a size of up to 2 meters, and some are even not put on a stand.

Most Angklung sets are performed by a group of people. Like in the Vietnamese Gong ensembles, each person carries one tone and has to know precisely at which time to shake his instrument. This kind of ensemble performance requires a good synchronisation between the players.

Egal ob Ensemble- oder Soloinstrument, das Angklung zeigt wiederum, daß viele Instrumente aus dem Werkstoff hergestellt werden, der praktisch überall vor der Haustür zu finden ist: Bambus. Im Ensemble ist eine gute Absprache Voraussetzung für ein gutes Gelingen, und so wird die Gruppe durch gemeinsames Üben zusammen geschweißt. Daher ist das Angklung auch in Schulen im Musikunterricht ein beliebtes Instrument.

The African Balafon is another rarely discussed topic when it comes to the true origin of xylophones. It can be found in many African countries, with sizes ranging from a half meter with 5 plates up to 2 meters with 21 plates. This instrument is struck with mallets, and often gets played by two players, one sitting opposite to the other.

If we turn the Balafon upside down, we can see the resonating gourds underneath the plates. These gourds have to swing freely if supporting a tone. The Balafon is commonly tuned in a pentatonic or diatonic scale, tuning of the keys happens with carving wood from the middle or tip of the plate.

Auf der Unterseite befinden sich unter den Platten Kalebassen, die mit einer Öffnung versehen sind, die von einer Membran überspannt sind (meist aus Spinnennetzen)und dem Instrument seinen typischen "klirrenden" Klang geben. Wie bei allen Xylofonen wird eine Platte durch Schleifen der mittleren oder äußeren Unterseite gestimmt.

The "Thelevi" from Ghana is also known as "Kashaka" or "Aslatua". The instrument is made of two swawa gourds bound together with a string. It is played in the palm of the players hand and based on a skilled player might be able to create fascinating and complex rhythms.
