Contrast

I have been told that it's not clear that this man was begging. I caught him when the hat wasn't extended.

Neat juxtaposition of dark/light. Think the have/have not message isn't as clear as it could be because the begger is nicely dressed compared to the tourist photographer. If you weren't there to know the reality, he could just be another tourist seeking shade.

Don't know whether you mean you'd rather not have him there, but I felt it was a design element indicating a relationship between the haves and have-nots.
