It's about time! A REAL butterfly showed up, a frequent visitor in past years, a Painted Lady. Update: a friend has pointed out that it is an American painted Lady. I had to go to previous years' photos and make sure I identified them properly. this site shows the clear differences: white sing spot on the American and two large eyes, vs. four eyes on the Painted Lady and no white wing spot.

I know there must be some host plant on my property on which the Painted Ladies (American Ladies!) lay their eggs because they appear in abundance (as do a variety of skippers).

By the way, this was not my favorite time of day (midday) to shoot butterflies, because of too many shadows, but when something is sighted so rarely, I shoot! Best rule for outdoor photography if it isn't an overcast day is before 10am and after 4pm.
