Update: Initially I felt I wasn't getting consistent focus lock because faces weren't in focus. After careful observation of my technique, I realized that I was locking focus and recomposing. With this focal length and large apertures, depth of field is shallow and I have to be more careful where I put my focus box. I haven't failed to achieve focus when I nail the area I want in focus (and my shutter speed is fast enough to stop motion).
