_MG_4211 Downy Woodpecker

One of the few pictures of birds at my deck feeders NOT taken through my windows or sliding door. This little bird looked almost as though it were in a trance. It clung there, beak agape for minutes, not moving. I decided to see what would happen if I opened the sliding door and went outside with my camera. It still did not move. I was able to get within about eight feet of it before it took off. (EXIF says Focus Distance was 3.83 meter, but I feel I was closer, and I'll bet that has something to do with the 1.6X crop factor)

Wonder what on earth she was doing? Beautiful shot. I love these little Downys. They are so vocal and plentiful. :)

Nice capture. We have lots of them here too. This one is a female.

We had one that did the same thing - "froze" on the feeder for about 10 minutes - when I opened the window he flew off. Great shot!

I think sometimes they freeze in fear hoping they will not be seen.

Beautiful little girl. I can't believe she let you get so close.
