Conundrum

So several years ago I fell into the grip of micro43 photography and in a very short while abandoned my Canon dslr equipment which included more lenses than I would like admit.

I appreciated the micro43 live view viewfinder with histogram visible BEFORE I pressed the shutter, touch focus, silent shooting, so many new features that I was thrilled - most of all I appreciated the much lower weight.

Today I was thinking about all that Canon equipment and what I would do with it. B&H would probably not even make an offer on some of it and selling privately is a big hassle - so I asked myself if I should just buy the 90D, which is attractively priced because it would have better control of high ISO noise (not much from reviews I've seen) and it had a 32.5 megapixel sensor. A larger sensor meant better resolution that would allow me to crop more and get better zoom range while retaining detail.

But then I noticed many comments about lack of sharpness with older lenses on the 90D! Apparently they were built for cameras with much smaller sensors and the 90D's would magnify any imperfections. Faster shutter speeds were suggested because the body has no stabilization...and the only stabilized lens I have is the 17-55 whose stabilizer has been acting up. I get intermittent hunting - not good. Shutting off the stabilization helps.

Then...I took some pictures with my 7D whose high ISO performance stinks. First thing I noticed was the color was extraordinary - beautiful! I used as slow a shutter speed as I would dare and then brought the pictures into DxO Photolab and found its noise reduction algorithym really did a great job at ISO 3200, a number I wouldn't have used in the past.

So...I'm thinking I really don't need a new body. I have to learn to appreciate the 7D + Photolab.

It'll be nice to use the 7D to trigger my Canon flashes remotely again for portraits!

I love how I'm able to talk myself out of purchases these days! Learning that the 90D will not work well with my older Canon lenses I've sealed the deal on a non-purchase. That was easy.
