I first became interested in growing African Violets under fluorescent lights when I visited my husband's aunt who was doing so in her house about 50 years ago. The first violet I had had single, dark purple flowers.
When I saw such a plant in a friend's house on March 10 of this year, I asked for a leaf and put it into a small container of water and placed it on a window shelf which received no sun.
Today, April 1, I noticed the first roots and will take the rooted leaf out of the water and place it into a small pot of moistened growing medium. The bag said "for container plants". It's not a sterilized mix, so time will tell how well it will grow in it. This gallery will be my "journal" which I hope will eventually container the emergence of a baby plant or several plants, probably after a few months. (I have a feeling that had I placed the freshly cut leaf in a soilless mix rather than a bottle of water, it might have taken a shorter time to produce babies.
If you're going to try planting an African Violet leaf make sure you don't leave a long stem on it because the babies form at the bottom of the stem and it will take longer for them to reach through the soil if they have to grow up to the top of the medium.
