To me, this picture is succeeds because of your use of the three primary colors in juxtaposition -- yellow, blue, and red. These are the strongest colors in the palette, and you make excellent use of them here. You fill the entire background with yellow, the only human in the image is draped in blue, and the sign, which is the punch line here, is in red.
