After the fall of the Wall, this badly bombed building, which had many incarnations, was taken over by squatters and artists who covered the inside with colorful street art. The building, in the former Jewish quarter of Berlin, is called Tacheles, a Yiddish word that means to speak directly and honestly. It is so named because of the repression experienced during the Nazi era and in defiance of the East German propensity to repress freedom of expression.
