The “New Synagogue” – which was constructed in 1866, and left in ruins after Kristallnacht and the Allied bombing of Berlin – has been completely renovated. The building’s gold dome and towers have been restored to their pre-war condition. However, rather than being restored to its original purpose as a place of worship, the huge main sanctuary now houses a museum of Berlin Jewish history and is used as a cultural center.
