Because of its canals, Brugge is often called the "Venice of the North". One time used to accommodate commercial ships, the canals are now exclusively used for tourist boats.
The magnificent medieval Church of Our Lady took two centuries to build, spanning the 13th to the 15th centuries. Its tower is 401 feet high and is the tallest structure in Brugge and the second tallest brickwork tower in the world (tallest is in Germany)
