The Burren

The Burren is a name derived from a Gaelic word meaning "stoney place". It is a unique, desolate landscape of limestone pavements that has been eroded producing ridges, fissures, sinkholes, towers and the like. The limestone rocks are interspersed with green grass and beautiful seasonal wildflowers. This limestone landscape is known as a "karst landscape" and is the largest of its kind in Europe.
