Bosque del Apache is Spanish for "woods of the Apache". Originally, the name came from the Spanish observance of the Apaches who routinely camped in the riverside forest. However, the name has come to mean one of the most spectacular National Wildlife Refuges in North America where tens of thousands of birds, including sandhill cranes, Arctic geese, and many ducks, gather each autumn making this refuge their winter home.
