This is a painting filled with doubt. It is of Saddam Hussein taken from an internet image. My doubts concerned whether we should go to war in Iraq. I painted this painting around the time of the 50th anniversary of Stalin's death. This had reminded me just how many "great world leaders" had died in bed. I did a small series of works including Pol Pot, Stalin, Verwoerd etc. My father had made similar mistakes around Hitler, calling Churchill a warmonger, despite being in the TA and therefore called up at the outbreak of War. In the end my heart won and I went for war with Saddam although this was not popular with many of my tutors who were against the war. They may well have been right.
