Tephritidae: Peacock Flies

Fruit Flies and Peacock Flies, Family Tephritidae

The members of this family are similar to those of another, better known family of fruit flies: Drosophilidae, which includes
Drosophila melagonaster, the common fruit fly that you bring home with fruit and that is widely used in science for genetics experiments.

The first series of five is of the False Star-thistle Peacock Fly; a full description of this introduced species is found with the first photo.

The second series is of the Rose Hip Fly, a species found all over North America.
