The nymphs burrow into the soil after hatching, where they feed on tree roots. They grow very
slowly, requiring 13-17 years to reach maturity. According to Audubon's Field Guide to North
American Insects, 14 broods of 17-year, and 5 broods of 13-year cicadas are known to exist today.
