Swiss Chard, Beta vulgaris

Beta vulgaris, var. cicia, family Chenopodiaceae.

B. vulgaris is the ancestor of the cultivated beets. Three subspecies are recognized:
Beta vulgaris, ssp maritima. Sea beet. North-West Europe; plant smaller, to 80 cm; root not swollen.
Beta vulgaris, ssp cicla - Chard
Beta vulgaris, ssp vulgaris. Europe. Plant larger, to 2 m tall; with a rounded fleshy taproot.
