Black Horse Fly, female

Black Horse Fly, Tabanus atratus

Female Horse Flies of genus Tabanus oviposit on plants overhanging fresh water.
Larvae drop into the water and live in the mud (like Odonata naiads) for two years.

Males of this genus feed on nectar; females bite and suck blood from large mammals.
