Skipper, sp

Fiery Skipper, Hylephila phyleus

The Fiery Skipper is perhaps the most boldly marked and most distinctly sexually dimorphic of our skippers.

Female underwings are a dull tan-brown; on top, they're very dark with a few bright spots.

Males are bright orange-yellow above and below, with a thin, narrow stigma.

The dingy skipper is found in the UK. This whole discussion stems from a clue in the London Times Crossword puzzle yesterday, so it's more about words than butterflies. Sorry!

The reason "dusky" is in quotation marks is that it is not a recognized name; it is my catch-all term for a number of similar and confusing Folded-winged Skippers including the Roadside, Rural, Sonora, Sandhill, Umber, Dun and Sachem Skippers that occur in this area. I do not find a "Dingy" Skipper listed in the Audubon or Peterson Field Guides.

no, it didn't solve the clue. There's also a dingy skipper.
