Larva of the Carolina Sphinx Moth, found on a garden tomato plant.
Very similar to Tomato Hornworm, Manduca quinquemaculata, which is the larva of the Five-spotted Hawkmoth.
Both species feed on various plants in the Nightshade family, Solanaceae; ie, the plant cannot be used to identify
the caterpillar. The Tobacco Hornworm has seven diagonal stripes; the Tomato worm has eight V-shaped marks.
Although the adult moths are sexually dimorphic, the gender of the caterpillars cannot be distinguished without dissection.
