Fox Maggot Fly, Wohlfahrtia vigil
These flies lay their eggs in/on/under the skin of live mammals in the manner of botflies and screwflies. The larvae pupate
under the skin and emerge as adults. They rarely attack humans in the US, although there are cases of infants being infested.
Found in the Santa Cruz Mountains far from any pastures or livestock.
