Newts

Rough-skinned and California Newts' ranges overlap. In the Bay Area,
both species are fairly abundant. How do you tell them apart?

1) Color surrounding the eye: on CA Newts the ventral color reaches
the eye and surrounds the lower portion; in Rough-skinneds, the dorsal
color surrounds the eye completely.

2) CA Newts' eyes are noticeably bulbous when viewed from above; Rough-
skinneds' eyes bulge out only very slightly; not sure which is the case here.

3) In hand, the dental patterns are different, but don't pick them up to look.
